Atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The protons and neutrons are in the nucleus. The energy holding the nucleus together is called binding energy.

When you split heavy nuclei (fission) or combine light ones (fusion), some of that binding energy gets released. That's nuclear power.
